Hope That Doesn’t Disappoint (my summer rescue)

Do you ever feel like you are just NOT capable of dealing with ALL THE THINGS?  And in the middle of those feelings you are ready to lose hope in the way everything turns out? My family had a lot going on in June and to be honest, I’m dropping a lot of balls.  The urgent, current happenings are getting my attention and those very important, but in the near future decisions and plans are weighing on me because they truly need my focus, NOW.

And as I write, summer is in full swing and I’ve only been out to do something on my “Summer” list, ONCE… The habit of “BUSY” is NOT helpful when my heart just wants some restoration.  So what’s next? I don’t want July to look the same as June and come to the end of the summer full of regret that I was too busy to play; too busy to enjoy my favorite places in the mountains and take a trip to the coast.   So here’s my plan:  I’m FINALLY  going to sit down with my calendar AND GOD and ask what he has for me for the rest of the summer.  I’ll ask for what I THINK I need and see where HE takes me because I need a rescue.  If I go it alone, not knowing what HE KNOWS, hopes can turn into disappointments and I’m not willing to risk that.   Speaking of hope, I’ve been reading a tremendous book, Waymaker, by a favorite author, Ann Voskamp.  Ann is a wealth of wisdom when it comes to experiencing God and recovering hope.  About hope, Ann says ”We are not meant to find hope in anything IN this world. We are meant to LOSE HOPE IN ANYTHING, HERE.”  She goes on to say, “The way to NOT lose hope is to not lose a holy imagination in the ways of God. It’s a poverty of imagination that bankrupts hope.  Even when you cannot imagine how he’s working, he’s working his way TO YOU. Working all things together for good. Working out a good story because he is the word and he only ultimately writes good stories.”

So I’m counting on that. I’ve seen it enough. How he writes my story and I may think I’m just doing my thing but he is planting the seeds in my heart that move me in the direction of his perfect plan. But when I check in with him, I get a sense we are doing this, together instead of me grasping for things.

So for summer, I’m going with my heart but checking in with him to make sure we’re on the same page and that will keep me from losing my hope.  Hoping in HIS perfect story is better than just trying to make my own.

“The way to NOT lose hope is

to not lose a holy imagination

in the ways of God.

It’s a poverty of imagination

that bankrupts hope.”

Ann Voskamp
