It’s with so much joy that I share my self portrait with you, available now in print.

The reference photo for this piece was one my husband took while we were fly fishing, and I’ve always loved it (see below). I had an opportunity to submit an entry for consideration in an art call, summer of 2023, and this was the piece I created for it. The art call theme was “Color in Motion,” and I loved what happened to the fall scene when I edited it to explode the fall colors. I couldn’t finish by the art call deadline, but it started a journey I’ll treasure for life.

”The River In Me” expresses deep emotions and personal reflection. I have never been good at introspection. What lies underneath my reactions to life is unknown to even me, for the most part. But God has me working on that, even as I released the original, I spent the evening crying tears that wouldn’t stop because I realized how much lies under the surface. More than I could imagine. And it needed to be seen.

And even as I wrote to share the original, God is showed me it all matters and I needed to seek it out with as much interest as I do the fish under the water. That, when I do, I’ll unearth a treasure of wisdom and healing that my heart needs so much. So the message of this piece became: If you are like me, and you’ve spent a lifetime not going back to witness the pain or wounds you’ve suffered because it’s just too uncomfortable. If you thought moving on without doing this kind of work is sufficient, too…I think we’ve been wrong…I think it matters to go back. To see, again. To understand, now, how it felt, then. And to witness. To care that it hurt. To offer comfort to that piece of us in the past. To be brave enough to see with new eyes. And then, the most important part: To ask God to enter that place to heal it…AS ONLY HE CAN…To SURRENDER it to him. Because he will do incredible things when we do. MIRACLES. And we get to witness, again. And cry. And be loved. Held. And love him back.I'm honored to share that this piece was juried into the 2024 Idaho Watercolor Society's Annual Juried Exhibition.
